Applying for Membership
All ophthalmologists in Georgia are eligible to apply for membership in the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology. To be considered for membership, please submit the following:
1. Completed Membership Application
2. Written recommendation from an Active Member who proposes your membership
Upon receipt by the Executive Office, completed application materials are reviewed and subject to approval by the GSO Membership Committee. Upon committee approval, applications are subject to approval vote by the GSO Council. Following approval by the Council, new members will be notified and invoiced for the first year's membership dues. Upon receipt of dues, new members will be considered active and shall receive the full membership benefits to which they are entitled. Pending applicants may register for CME meetings at the active member rate.

Member Types
Active Member
A physician in the State of Georgia whose practice includes a substantial element of the specialty of ophthalmology shall be eligible for active membership in the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology. Each member must be a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology or qualified to take the examination given by the American Board of Ophthalmology, leading to a certificate.
Senior-Active Member
Members who have attained the age of 65 and maintain an active ophthalmology office practice may petition the Council in writing to be granted Senior-Active status. The Council shall consider the Senior-Active status request of a member as early as practicable. Senior-Active members shall receive all the privileges of Active members.
Resident/Fellow
Resident/Fellow status may be granted to ophthalmologists in residency or fellowship training in Georgia upon written application to the Society. Such application shall include recommendation from the applicant's Chief of Service. Residents and Fellows shall not be required to pay membership dues or registration fees at scientific meetings of the Society. Residents and Fellows are not entitled to vote or hold office in the Society. Resident/Fellow membership status shall end upon the applicant's completion of training. Resident/Fellows may apply to become an Active member of the Society upon completion of their training.
Recent Graduate
A physician less than three years removed from ophthalmology residency training shall be considered a Recent Graduate and shall present a letter from his/her chief of service which details the extent of his/her training, along with a statement regarding the character of the applicant. After no more than three years of Recent Graduate status (as appropriate), the member shall automatically advance to Active Member.
Emeritus Member
Active members who have attained the age of 65 and who have retired from the practice of ophthalmology may apply for Emeritus Status. Active members who have had active membership for 25 years and who retired from the practice of ophthalmology prior to reaching age 65 may also apply for Emeritus status. Emeritus status members may not hold office, but shall receive all other privileges of Active members except voting privileges.
Military Member
Consideration shall be given to ophthalmologists serving the armed forces of the United States of America in the state of Georgia. Georgia licensure shall not be required. They shall be eligible to attend scientific meetings and receive mailings. They shall not be able to vote or hold office in the society.
Annual Dues
Annual membership dues are invoiced annually following the Society's Annual CME Meeting. First time and renewal dues payments may be made online or by phone, fax, or mail.
*First-time Active Members or members who have applied for reinstatement after being inactive four (4) or more years shall pay reduced first-year dues of $500.

Reinstatement
Former members who have been inactive less than four (4) years are eligible for reinstatement through one of the following methods:
- Payment of annual dues for the current and previous years
- Submission of new member application, supporting materials as required, and initial dues payment
Former members who have been inactive for four (4) years or more must reapply as a new member.
